Brian Lumley has had a long career in horror and created one of the great horror series of all time. Lumley spent much of his life in the military until retiring in 1980. He'd fallen for the stories of H.P. Lovecraft and the hallowed halls of Miskatonic University at an early age and if you read his Titus Crow books you can see the obvious influence.
When Lumley first created Harry Keogh the Necroscope and the secret psionic government agency he would eventually work for, Keogh used much of his military knowledge in how the agency worked. There is something about Lumley's characters and stories that are just amazing. The books stretch years and years and you get to know each of the characters.
When you start a new book, it's like meeting an old friend. Lumley also isn't afraid to change things up and kill off well loved characters. Each one hits like a bullet, knocking you back so you go back and read it again just to make sure you understood it right. While much of his work was created in the 1980s and early 90's, they have resurfaced in reissues, so most of his books are on the shelves in online bookstores.
Lumley hasn't retired from writing either. There are more books planned including more of the Necroscope series. In 2010, Lumley, a long time active member of the Horror Writers Association, was given the organization lifetime achievement award. Lumley may be getting on in years, but he has no intention of slowing down.
