I first started reading Brian Lumley in college and it wasn't even something I thought was going to be a big deal. I wanted a book that was interesting and had a several already written in the series, so I could just keep going.
Necroscope was first foray into the world of Harry Keogh, the man who could speak with the dead and eventually fight vampires. What made these books amazing wasn't the action and adventure, that was cool, but the characters. Harry was a wounded man with plenty of demons both physical and emotional.
Harry has been by far the most popular of Lumley's character despite other works including Titus Crow. Like all tragic heroes, Harry met a dramatic end, but his legacy lived on for several more books. He had sons and regular people chosen to carry his ability and Lumley expanded Harry's story into several books outlining his “Lost Years.”
No matter how many times Lumley swears Harry's done and will never come back, the fans cry out and soon another story is in the works. I fear the day that Harry will truly forever be gone. Lumley isn't getting any younger and while a new short story comes out every couple of years and if we are lucky another book, but even Harry has a shelf life.
Lumley slowed down his writing these past years as I assume he is enjoying a semi retirement. Once an active member of the Horror Writer's Association, Lumley spends his days in his native UK with his wife dreaming up new worlds and adventures for the world's only true Necroscope.
